The Lakeview Centennial High School family has suffered another great loss. Stephen Whitlow, the son of Brenda and John Whitlow, lost his battle with cancer Saturday night. Brenda is our Piano teacher at Lakeview. Stephen has a sister, Caroline, that attends Garland High School. Stephen was 12 years old and was revered as a strong individual with a heart of gold.
At the age of 10, Stephen suffered from an upper respiratory infection and headaches. The antibiotics cleared up the infection, but the headaches continued. After numerous visits the Whitlows took Stephen to Dallas Children’s Medical Center for a routine CAT scan. The CAT scan revealed a tumor the size of a grapefruit of his brain. The doctors removed 90 percent of the tumor which was determined cancerous and needed aggressive treatment for recovery. Throughout the aggressive treatment, Stephen was strong and remained positive while he attended Austin Academy.
Last fall, the Lakeview family hosted a golf tournament in his name and raised close to $14,000.00 dollars to help the family. The Whitlows and Stephen were very appreciative of the event, especially since he received an autographed jersey from Lance Armstrong encouraging Stephen to keep fighting. In October, Lakeview will continue to host a golf tournament with the aspirations of naming a scholarship after Stephen Whitlow.
Thank you for continuing to offer your support to our students, our staff and to the Whitlow family during this very difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Clayton Dabney Foundation for Kids or Community Hospice of Texas.
