Prayers for the Whitlow Family
|
|
The Lakeview Centennial High School family has suffered another great loss. Stephen Whitlow, the son of Brenda and John Whitlow, lost his battle with cancer Saturday night. Brenda is our Piano teacher at Lakeview. Stephen has a sister, Caroline, that attends Garland High School. Stephen was 12 years old and was revered as a strong individual with a heart of gold.
At the age of 10, Stephen suffered from an upper respiratory infection and headaches. The antibiotics cleared up the infection, but the headaches continued. After numerous visits the Whitlows took Stephen to Dallas Children’s Medical Center for a routine CAT scan. The CAT scan revealed a tumor the size of a grapefruit of his brain. The doctors removed 90 percent of the tumor which was determined cancerous and needed aggressive treatment for recovery. Throughout the aggressive treatment, Stephen was strong and remained positive while he attended Austin Academy.
Last fall, the Lakeview family hosted a golf tournament in his name and raised close to $14,000.00 dollars to help the family. The Whitlows and Stephen were very appreciative of the event, especially since he received an autographed jersey from Lance Armstrong encouraging Stephen to keep fighting. In October, Lakeview will continue to host a golf tournament with the aspirations of naming a scholarship after Stephen Whitlow.
Thank you for continuing to offer your support to our students, our staff and to the Whitlow family during this very difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Clayton Dabney Foundation for Kids or Community Hospice of Texas.

LCHS 2nd Annual Charity Golf Tournament
|
|
Many of our students come from low socioeconomic homes and they truly believe a college education is out of their reach financially. We would love to be able to change the mind set of our students and help them believe that college is a attainable goal academically and financially .
Lakeview offers a variety of Magnet programs which also provide a strong foundation in preparing motivated students for entrance into college and for advancement in their chosen careers.
Lakeview has secured Firewheel Golf Center in Garland to host a four-man scramble on Saturday, October 18, 2008. We are depending on community donations and ticket sales to help us in our efforts to raise funds for these promising students.
We would like to request your assistance in providing this scholarship opportunity for all of our well-deserving students. This is a great opportunity for the Garland ISD community to show support for our educators and students. Your donation would be greatly appreciated!

Lakeview Alumni Scholarship Fund
|
|
The alumni of Lakeview Centennial High are setting up a permanent scholarship fund for the future graduates of Lakeview High. We are going to establish a nonprofit organization (contributions will be tax deductible) and set up a trust fund so that by only using the interest we will have a permanent scholarship source.
This scholarship fund will be funded by each of the 10,000 or so alumni buying a membership for $100 in the Lakeview Alumni Scholarship Fund. This way the cost will be a one time contribution that will aid LCHS graduates forever. Each alumni (and any friend) of our school needs only to fill out this application and send it with a $100 check made out to the Lakeview Alumni Scholarship Fund. Be sure to verify your snail mail address and include your email address so we can send you noteworthy news from Lakeview Centennial High.
Sincerely,
Brent Theis Executive Director Lakeview Alumni Scholarship Fund
